Chemistry

Overview

The discipline of chemistry is a study of the material makeup of the universe. Chemistry is aimed at encouraging students to ask questions about the materials around them and how they can benefit people or society in general.

Key Stage 3

Chemistry is delivered to year 7 students in mixed ability form groups; the key stage three chemistry courses is currently being redeveloped to address the requirements of the new secondary curriculum. In years eight and nine the students are taught in sets grouped by ability to allow teaching and learning to occur at the highest levels.

Key Stage 4

At Key Stage 4 we follow the AQA chemistry specification; students spend two hours per week following the course. It is broken down into four units one of which is internally assessed. Some example units are; structure and bonding, Rocks and metals, rates of reactions and development of the periodic table.

Key Stage 5

At Key Stage 5, Students follow the new AQA A level course as this allows for a smooth transition from GCSE into GCE. Chemistry is delivered in five periods per week by two different teachers, one of these periods is a dedicated practical lesson in our A level chemistry lab to allow students to experience the concepts they are learning first hand.
