GCSE Art, Craft and Design

Art, Craft and Design offers the pupil a unique vehicle for communication and self expression.  Pupils are encouraged to observe, select and interpret with imagination, feeling and understanding.  Each pupil who chooses to take Art, Craft and Design at GCSE level should have an interest in the creative process as well as a willingness to work hard.  The course is structured so that pupils are able to cover the following areas.  

  • Drawing and painting
  • Felt making
  • Ceramics
  • Printmaking
  • Glass fusing
  • Mixed media
  • Sculpture
  • Graphic communication
  • Photography

There will be two assessments during the course before pupils take an externally set examination.  This is marked both internally and externally. During the two year course, pupils will be provided with project titles and information regarding sketchbook preparation and content. Pupils will be strongly encouraged to continue with coursework activities to form part of the homework tasks.

Assessment:
60% is allocated to Component 1 - Portfolio, 40% is allocated to Component 2 - Externally set assignment.  The ten hour GCSE exam will take place in the Spring term in Year 11.

Career opportunities are diverse and include Advertising, Creative Graphics, Fashion, Film, Television, Photography, Video, Printing, Interior Design, Jewellery, Product Design, Stage and Design, Exhibition Design and Book Illustration.
