Boarding pupils receive outstanding care and support at Keswick School

Ofsted conducted a welfare inspection in our Lairthwaite Boarding House between 27-29 June. The new inspection framework raises the bar yet again making it very difficult to be graded outstanding. Against this backdrop the published inspection report, released during the summer holidays, matched the best boarding report the school has ever received. To our delight it recognised that the care and support we provide to boarding students is ‘outstanding’. The inspection report states:

"Being in the boarding house gives an insight into the respect and fondness that staff and pupils have for each other. This creates an atmosphere where pupils can relax, play, cement friendships and feel at home."

"The boarding staff work cohesively with school staff, with some having roles in both areas. This provides boarding pupils with the holistic, joined-up approach to boarding and education that is a real strength of the school."

A school’s culture and ethos determines whether children will flourish.  At Keswick School our boarding students help shape the culture and bring a real vibrancy to our community. They participate in a wide range of extra-curricular activities including archery, sailing, music, drama, dance, sports, craft work and sometimes go to the Theatre by the Lake for a bit of sophistication on a Friday night!

At Keswick School we believe in the benefits of boarding alongside the opportunities we can offer to our day pupils. Living away from home with outstanding study facilities and the character development that flows from opportunities outside the classroom help make boarding students both confident and successful. It is gratifying to see that Ofsted recognise these benefits and our innovative and creative approach to education.

"Our boarding house is a happy place with students from around Cumbria and abroad living, working and having fun together. To be recognised for outstanding care and support is fantastic, particularly under the revised inspection framework. It confirms that our approach works and we are privileged to witness this in the development of all our pupils."
Simon Jackson, Head teacher

"We really enjoyed the time the Ofsted inspectors spent chatting with us and it’s great to know they realised how much we enjoy boarding."
Lucy, Year 11 boarding student
