BTEC Business Studies

BTEC Business Studies (BTEC First Award Level 2)

Business Studies offers pupils the opportunity to study a subject which they have not studies before. Business studies will examine the business world, investigate the different functional areas an dhow businesses operate within the external environment.
This is a vocational qualification which teaches students how business theory mentioned below can be applied to real life business situations.  There will be the opportunity with this programme of study to become involved in extensive project work and practical application of business theory.  If you choose to study BTEC Business Studies you will study the following topics:

  • Enterprise in the Business World – the unit explores what businesses do, trends that affect them, how they operate and the factors that influence their success.
  • Finance – Students will learn how to construct breakeven charts and cash flow models as well as be able to identify the different business costs and ways to record financial transactions. This is an examined unit with students answering multiple choice questions on the computer.
  • Sales and Personal Selling – Students will run a stall at the school Christmas Fayre and will investigate the importance of good customer service.
  • Recruitment, Selection and Employment – Students will look at a variety of job roles and organisational structures.  They will also complete important recruitment documents and have the opportunity to complete an application and an interview for a specific job role.

Completing 4 units of this course is equivalent to one GCSE (A*- E). Pupils will be awarded a pass, merit, distinction or level 1 pass. Students will complete assignments which will be continually assessed and internally marked. Pupils will have the opportunity to improve their work until they feel that they have fulfilled their potential. The BTEC has three pieces of internally assessed portfolio work and one external finance exam.

Within the Business Studies department we are looking for students who are hard working, motivated, committed to their work and who have an interest in the business world.

This course combines well with many other subjects, it is also a popular course for progression to A level or BTEC Level 3 courses.  It also equips students to go on to college courses or apprenticeships.
