Massif Music Centre

Passion for developing music and the performing arts is high on the agenda at Keswick School. This is reflected in a recent £60,000 investment to develop music on top of the new £2.2 million Judi Dench Performing Arts Theatre. The new Crosthwaite Music Centre now boasts 2 classrooms, a ‘break out’ practice space as well as a professional recording studio, Massif Music. The new facilities, which also includes a suite of 18 iMac computers, will open new musical opportunities for both students as well as the local community.

Music recording and editing are key elements of the new music curriculum, alongside the more traditional aspects of music performance, composition and theory.  This begins in Year 7 and is built upon throughout KS3. Students then have the option to progress to GCSE music and then A Level music or music technology. Some students also received tuition and experience in controlling the live sound for school events through the ‘Live Sound’ club.

Live performance remains a prominent part of the music department with choirs, ensembles and solo performers regularly participating in school-based events as well as those in the local community and further afield. These include: ‘Young Musician of the Year,’ Workington and Carlisle music festivals, the Keswick Jazz festival, the 'Young Musician's Concert at Theatre by the Lake', song writing competitions, iPerform concerts, as well as performing recently for BBC's Children in Need.

In addition to providing a learning experience for the pupils, the recording studio is already proving a popular facility for local musicians and performers. It's run by professional sound engineer, Rory McDonald, and has links with the well-established Broadwater Studios in Newcastle. The facility has already been used by a number of local bands and solo artists to record, mix and master both individual tracks as well as full albums. The studio also runs a number of special offers such as, ‘Solo Superstar’ and ‘Songwriter Experience’ to give musicians of all backgrounds an opportunity to make a recording.  For more information about Massif Music at Keswick School or to book a recording session visit: www.massifmusic.co.uk
