Citizenship
Overview
Citizenship started as PSE in 1991 and has grown and developed over the years into the large department it is today. It uses the wide experience of all staff to cover areas of both Citizenship and PSHEE.
Key Stage 3
In Key Stage 3 pupils have an hour a week where they cover a wide range of topics. In Year 7 topics are as diverse as What is Citizenship?, Smoking, Managing your time, Chidren’s Rights and Government and Elections. In Year 8, pupils also have some Health and Careers lessons. There topics range from Local Democracy, Police and Crime, Safety to Older People. In Year 9, pupils continue to have Careers and Health. Other topics include Money Management, Animal and Human Rights, Leisure and Sport and Crimes and Punishment. Pupils are assessed termly and NC levels are issued. Pupils also complete Reflection sheets on a regular basis, where they set their own targets.
Key Stage 4
A carousel system operates in KS4, where pupils are taught a topic by a specialist member of staff. These include Health, Crime, Consumer Rights, the EU, Media, Careers and RPE. Pupils will undertaken mini projects throughout their 2 year course.
Extra Curricular
Pupils in KS3 have participated in a variety of activities such as Smoking Roadshows, Fire quizzes and Mock Trial competitions.
