Lairthwaite Boarding House

We are delighted to announce that our October 2018 OFSTED inspection rated us as OUTSTANDING.

One of 34 State Boarding Schools in England and Wales, Keswick school is set in a stunning location on the edge of the attractive market town of Keswick in the heart of the Lake District National Park, now also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Lairthwaite Boarding House was purpose built on the edge of the school site and has been recently refurbished to a very high standard. It is a co-educational house designed to meet the needs of over 50 students aged 11-18. This relatively low number of places generates a unique family environment within the boarding house, which has proven to be very successful formula and makes the older boarders not want to leave at the end of their time, often returning in years to come. The residential house staff, with over 120 years combined experience, seek to create a safe, caring and stimulating ethos in which boarders are able to develop and mature. We cherish our successful record of co-educational boarding that began over one hundred years ago in 1898.

We welcome boarders from Britain and overseas.  Boarders in residence include students from rural Cumbria, other parts of the UK and those whose parents are working on overseas contracts around the world.  The presence of boarders from a wide geographical background provides a stimulating and cosmopolitan contribution to the communal life of both boarding and day pupils at Keswick school.

Opportunities exist for the involvement of boarders in a wide range of extra-curricular activities. Such weekend activities include swinging through the trees at Go-Ape, visiting the local cinema, working in the drama center, canoeing, craft workshops, ten-pin bowling, horse riding, fell walking, Laser Quest, etc. The school has an excellent record for team sports and outdoor education and many boarders represent the school and Town in these areas. The positive application by the boarders of their experiences in a residential community is certainly a very worthwhile preparation for living away from home at University or a place of work.

Boarders share well furnished bedrooms of 2-4 students and modern bathrooms.  With two common rooms, a music room, a computer room and a large outside area, there is ample space for everyone.  All boarders benefit from direct access to the school network on their own electronic devices.
