Testimonial from the parent of a flexi boarder
It’s an interesting process to transition from primary to secondary school. Our daughter really enjoyed the open evening and made it clear to us as parents that this is where she would like to continue her schooling. We put Keswick down on the selection form as our number one not knowing if she would secure a place and knowing that we had a challenge in front of us getting her to school on a daily basis. Cumbria is a very large county.
Our daughter did get a place, and through year 7 commuted daily in the car to Penrith, then on the service bus to Keswick. Early mornings, late evenings were tough during the dark winter months. Late buses, no bus, breakdowns.
Keswick is unique in that it is one of the state secondary schools with a boarding provision. The problem was it was full time boarding. During the summer of 2024, after our daughter asked if we could look at boarding I approached the school to see if they had a flexi boarding option, so that she could stay Monday to Friday and return home on the weekend.
The team at school listened to our enquiry and had actually internally been looking at options to introduce a weekly option.
Our daughter joined as a flexi boarder in September 24, home at the weekends. It has made a huge difference - she is able to access the after-school clubs previously difficult due to bus times, the set aside homework prep sessions mean that we can spend more time doing family stuff at the weekend. No more late arrivals, and a happier and more confident daughter.
The team at boarding have been super helping her settle in, super rooms with the most wonderful views of the Lakeland fells, if you have a son or daughter who travels daily a large distance on public transport to school then you should check out the boarding option.
